When people are given an expectation, they usually strive to meet it. When a person sets an expectation of themselves they commit to meeting it. When business leaders set an expectation for themselves and their company, it’s a vision that the entire organization can rally behind.

In reviewing Maryland Tech Council’s awards, I noticed that eOriginal, Inc. was named Emerging Company of the Year. Their president, Steve Bisbee, is quoted about his company’s commitment to meeting a rapidly expanding marketplace. While he is gracious about the award and their achievement, I was struck by his forward looking statement. He has an expectation for a next step which is critical for leaders that head growing companies.

When leaders start to set positive expectations about themselves and their work environment, there are a few changes that quickly take place.

  1. People find it easier to grasp new information. They are able to make connections faster, allowing them to tackle complex problems confidently and productively. This positive thinking leads to better decision making.
  2. Those who have positive expectations also have more energy. They are less likely to feel lethargic and apathetic about their positions. They are also more resilient to failures.
  3. Leaders setting positive expectations can spread the sentiment across the company. This is one infectious agent that you want all of the employees in your organization to catch.

Cultivate positive expectations around your organization. It can be a fantastic way of establishing a productive atmosphere and drive the business forward.
